Bitcoin, Ethereum Tumble 3% as August Market Pullback Begins

Bitcoin and Ethereum have tumbled over 3% in the past 24 hours as the crypto market enters August with weakened momentum and mixed whale activity signals. The pullback has pushed both assets below key technical support levels, raising questions about institutional conviction as the summer transition unfolds. Global cryptocurrency market capitalization has declined to $2.25 trillion, marking a 2.4% drop over the same period.

The August Selloff Begins

Bitcoin is trading at $62,868.98 after failing to sustain momentum near the upper boundary of its descending channel. Ethereum has slipped to $1,904.27, retreating from attempts to hold above the rising trendline that underpinned its July recovery. The broader market saw trading volume reach $63.9 billion across all digital assets, with Bitcoin maintaining dominance at 56% of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization.

The timing of this decline is significant. July had delivered relative strength for the sector, but the transition into August has brought immediate selling pressure. Technical indicators now reflect this shift. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has dipped below the neutral 50 level to around 44, signaling weakening bullish momentum. Block Digest’s proprietary BD Pulse indicator has settled at 45 out of 100, reinforcing the neutral-to-bearish posture of the market at this critical juncture.

Technical Levels Under Pressure

For Bitcoin, the immediate support zone sits at $61,400, with a more significant floor at $59,070. A sustained break below this second level could expose the asset to the lower boundary of its descending channel, positioned around $55,400. On the upside, bulls must reclaim the descending trendline before attempting to push past resistance at $64,567. A sustained move above this threshold could pave the way for a retest of $67,172, where historical seller concentration is expected to re-emerge.

Ethereum faces its own critical inflection. The cryptocurrency has held above a broken trendline for approximately two weeks but is now pressing into a resistance zone just below $2,000. This level carries clear psychological weight in the market. ETH had previously failed to sustain gains above the rising trendline supporting its late-July recovery, indicating that buyers are losing momentum as price approaches this key decision zone.

Mixed Signals From On-Chain Whale Activity

On-chain data reveals a fragmented picture of institutional and whale sentiment. Whale accumulation patterns and a potential breakout formation suggest some bullish underpinning, with the MVRV golden cross hinting at upside potential. However, this optimistic framing masks a troubling development: approximately 60 mega-whale wallets holding 10,000 or more ETH have completely emptied or consolidated their positions. This exodus of major Ethereum holders flashes a mid-term warning signal for altcoins more broadly, suggesting that the largest players may be rotating away from smaller-cap digital assets.

Block Digest’s Long/Short Account Ratio stands at 2.24, with longs comprising 69.2% of positions against shorts at 30.8%. This imbalance, while favoring buyers, has not prevented the pullback and may indicate that retail and smaller traders are outnumbered by larger players, some of whom are now reducing exposure. The funding rate sits at positive 0.0088%, indicating that leveraged longs are still paying shorts a premium, though at modest levels that do not yet signal euphoric leverage accumulation.

Security Concerns Compound Market Caution

The August selloff arrives against a backdrop of heightened security concerns within the industry. Cryptocurrency projects lost over $1 billion across a record number of exploit incidents during the first half of 2026. North Korea-linked hackers were responsible for nearly $600 million of these losses, executing attacks primarily through social engineering schemes targeting multisig signers. This environment of escalating security breaches may be weighing on institutional confidence, particularly among larger players evaluating long-term positions in vulnerable protocols and chains.

What This Means for the Market

The sharp reversal as the calendar flips to August represents more than a routine technical pullback. The combination of whale position consolidation, rejection at key resistance levels, and persistent security vulnerabilities in the broader ecosystem suggests institutional confidence remains fragile. While the BD Extreme Index reading of positive 0.56 sigma remains within normal range and does not signal extreme conditions, the directional pressure is decidedly downward. Bitcoin and Ethereum must demonstrate renewed buying interest above their respective resistance zones to restore the bullish narrative that carried the market through July; failure to do so could accelerate the decline toward lower support levels that would test broader market resilience in the final months of 2026.
